The power of dance

There is truly a power in dancing –  physical and mental well-being, spatial awareness, social connections, rhythm, cognitive strengthening, creative expression – the list goes on.  Whether a child at play, a professional on stage, a student in the classroom, or an audience member watching, dance provides joy, exhilaration and so much more. Thus, I founded SPDC as a non-profit 501(c)3 in the State of Connecticut in 1991. SPDC has morphed throughout the years, following the trajectory of life.

Within these pages you will find the scope of our work, from past to present to future. Dive in and find out what we are all about…

Penelope’s Odyssey

In a time-bending tale of love, betrayal, courage and wisdom - eight dancers tell the tale of Penelope’s Odyssey in 75 minutes of seduction, backstabbing, power play, and disguise.

The Pearl

Through a poetic interweaving of projected photography and choreography, seven women share the struggles they each endure between their conditioned selves and their true nature. The Pearl is designed to provoke poignant, honest dialogue by intimately confronting the destructive nature of commercially propagated norms.

Bushnell Digital Dance

In the Fall of 2021, Ryan Glista of the Bushnell Digital Dance Project reached out to choreographer Sonia Plumb to create the first ever digital mapping performance for the Bushnell Performing Arts Center.

Touch – A Digital Duet

Touch – A Digital Duet was conceived and created during the first phase of the 2020 pandemic lockdown. Isolated from friends, family and loved ones, lacking physical contact, the only way to connect was through the digital space of the virtual world.

Supporting our mission

We’re a nonprofit. Yet ticket prices, for live or streaming performances, never fully cover the cost of creating dance. Which entails paying for dancers, designers (costume, sound, projection), rehearsal space, and plenty more.

Corporate and individual donors keep the show going. Please donate generously. We thank you sincerely to the tips of our toes!

DIVERSITY,
EQUITY AND
INCLUSION

Our mission and vision since 1991

Sonia Plumb Dance Company values equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in our programming on stage, in the classroom and in the community. We seek to uphold these values by providing training to create a diverse workforce (dancers, teachers, staff), to offer free and low-cost access when needed to our performances and to engage with our community and our neighbors in the development of our programming. We acknowledge the systems that have been put in place which have often excluded individuals and communities from opportunities based on race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, class, age, and geography, and strive to counter those inequities in our programming, hiring and Board and volunteer representation.

Land Acknowledgement

This land acknowledgement statement strives to recognize that the land we work, create, play and live on, was wrongfully taken from the indigenous peoples that came before us. SPDC is legally located on the lands of the Tunxis, Wangunks, Sicaog (Saukiog) and Poquonook where we have rehearsed, performed and educated for 30+ years. The creative vision stems for our Artistic Director who resides on the lands of the Wabanaki (Dawnland Confederacy) and N’dakina (Abenaki/Abenaquis). Our dance artists additioinally rehearse and/or perform on the lands of the Canarsie, Munsee Lenape, Mohican, Wappinger and Schaghticoke.
